The Connection Deck

Conversation Cards for Kids and Co-Parents

Families living separately know how important it is to keep connected to each other but finding time to connect in meaningful (non-confrontational) ways is hard. Life is busy and we can end up in transactional conversations talking more about Life Admin than our deeper needs and relationships.

That’s why Liv and I created The Connection Deck. These cards are designed to guide you to ask meaningful questions and encourage open dialogue between children and co-parents, even when you’re apart.

The Connection Deck is a tool designed to bridge the gap between separated families. Whether your child is with you or their other parent, these cards help maintain open dialogue, emotional support, and love.

Examples of Questions:

  • "What’s something fun you did today that made you smile?"
  • "What do you wish you could tell me right now?"
  • “What is a recipe you like to cook that you learnt at your other house?”

These cards are a simple but powerful tool to help your child feel seen, heard, and loved by both parents.

  • 1. Simple and Easy to Use:

The cards are designed to be quick and easy to incorporate into everyday life. Whether you’re on the phone, video chatting, or spending time together, you can pull out a card to spark a thoughtful conversation.

    2. Create a Routine:

You can make the cards part of a regular routine, like a weekly check-in. Ask one card question each time you communicate. Over time, these consistent conversations will help build emotional understanding and closeness.

    3. Incorporate Into Daily Life:
The questions are crafted to fit seamlessly into any conversation—whether it's during dinner, while driving, or before bed. No pressure, just a simple moment to connect.

    4. Encourage Open Sharing:
Encourage both your child and their co-parent to answer the questions. This gives everyone a chance to share their feelings and experiences, creating mutual understanding and empathy.

    5. Have fun learning about each other

You can all come together on a video chat and pull one question and then ask everyone to share. It can be a fun way to have light-hearted conversations too! I like to learn new recipes that Liv can enjoy at both houses - but her dad is a way better cook!
